So you want to be a department chair? Or maybe you are a fairly new department head (I use the words department chair and head interchangeably). Or maybe you have been a chair for a while.
Hopefully this blog will have information that anyone, aspiring to be a chair, or already in place, will find helpful. While I will introduce some topics, my goal is that others weigh in with their perspective. I am also hopeful that you will suggest topics for discussion as well.
Those of you who are unit heads already know this, but being a department chair is the hardest job at a university. I will discuss this in more depth in future postings. But being a unit head means you interact with students, parents, faculty and staff, the dean (or your boss), other administrators, alumni, inndustry and other stakeholders.
Among some of the topics that quickly came to mind that I thought would be useful to post on in the future are:
- Leadership Models
- Developing Future Academic Leaders
- Annual Faculty Evaluations
- Hiring New Faculty
- Dealing with the Dean
- Development/Advisory Boards
- Student Issues
- Teaching Loads and Research Expectations
- How to Cope with Toxic Faculty Members
- How to Lead a Faculty Meeting
- Strategic Plans
- Mediating Conflict
This short list of topics should get us started.
I look forward to upcoming discussions with you.
